the journalism is excellent but the app is disappointing. it doesn't navigate properly between articles. you can end up anywhere. there is no home button on each individual article. you have to repeatedly hit the back button. I'm going to uninstall and go back to using the website.

Downloads for weekly audio edition now fails. Worked fine last week. now broken. Their tech support was useless. Oddly individual audio stories play. Their speed controls are really bad. 75% or 125% is terrible. some of their younger narrators rush through their reads. Inconsistent narrator speeds

A lot of ads. On the positive side, this app is sleek and easy to navigate, with core functionalities easy to find and use, faster than older versions. The offline functionality that Espresso gave up long ago is very welcome. But there is one ad for every half page, which way too much given the subscription price. Better use offline or with an ad blocker, or stick to the website.

In 2024 I left a tepid review for this app. Since then the Economist has made several positive changes. The app is faster to load, articles automatically bookmark thenselves, and navigation is easier. The one area that needs improvement is that listening to an article should have the same reverse/go-forward toggles as a podcast. Right now if you hit the back or forward buttons on your car or headphones, you skip the entire article.

Since my review was posted last year, the Economist has done it! I now have a sleeping timer. Thank you so much! I have changed 4 star to 5 star. [July 2025] I just wish there could be a sleep timer built into the app, as I quite often listen to your podcast before bed. Thank you.
